What is a UVIP?
The Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) is a document from ServiceOntario about a specific vehicle. In a private sale in Ontario, the seller must give the buyer a UVIP.
It shows the vehicle's registration history in Ontario, its brand (for example rebuilt or salvage), and any registered liens.
Why liens matter
A lien means someone, usually a lender, has a financial claim on the car. If you buy a car with a lien and the seller doesn't pay it off, the lender may still be able to take the car.
That is why you should never pay for a car with an outstanding lien until the lien is cleared.
How to read the lien section
Look for the lien information section of the UVIP. If a lien is listed, note the lender's name and the amount.
Check the date the UVIP was issued. A UVIP is a snapshot. If it's old, ask the seller for a new one.
What to do if there is a lien
Ask the seller to pay off the loan and give you a lien discharge letter from the lender before you pay.
If the seller wants to use your money to pay the lender, do it at the lender or a bank so the payment goes directly to them, and get the discharge in writing.
If the seller refuses or rushes you, walk away.
Checklist
- Ask for the UVIP before you meet.
- Match the VIN on the UVIP to the VIN on the dashboard and door.
- Make sure the seller is the owner named on the UVIP.
- No lien listed, or a written discharge for any lien.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection before you pay.
